Alexander Fleming's discovery of penicillin revolutionized modern medicine. A Petri dish with Staphylococcus bacteria2had been contaminated by a blue-green mold that created3a bacteria-free zone. The mold4was identified as Penicillium notatum. Though Fleming published5his findings in 1929, extraction proved challenging as6early attempts failed. Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain7successfully purified penicillin for medical use in 1940. By 19438, it was mass-produced for Allied troops, saving countless lives. The three scientists9shared the Nobel Prize in 1945 for developing the world's first antibiotic.
